Oshogatsu at the Boston Children's Museum

Oshogatsu, a festival welcoming the New Year, is one of Japan’s most important annual festivals. Join us at the Children's Museum to celebrate 2011, the Year of the Rabbit. Following our performance will be a shi-shi-mai (lion dance) and parade with taiko accompaniment. The Oshogatsu program is jointly sponsored by both the Japan Society of Boston and the Boston Children's Museum.

This Saturday attendees of Anime Boston will have the opportunity to both hear a performance and attend a demonstration on the art of Japanese drumming by Odaiko New England. The demonstration is at 11:30 am and the performance at 3:30 pm. The performance will also feature members of the rock band Ten, including koto player Yuki Yasuda. A convention admission will be required. Please check the convention schedule for times, as they are subject to change.

Following the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan in March, many were left devastated, without food or water, and some without a home. The three Japanese drumming, or Taiko, groups of Boston decided to host a fundraising event, Artists for Japan, as a way to raise money for relief efforts in Japan. The event will consist of a Benefit Concert, where the three Taiko groups and their friends will perform music and other performing arts, and a Silent Auction, from which all proceeds will be given to the Japanese Disaster Relief Fund and the Japan Animal Rescue and Support.

Boston Dragon Boats

Boston Dragon Boat Festival

Boston's Dragon Boat Festival transforms ancient traditions into an exciting cultural event and is the longest-running dragon boat festival in North America. Odaiko New England is thrilled to once again send some noise across the Charles River toward the Boston-side races.

The Cambridge-side festival starts at 12:00 noon and admission is free. Odaiko New England performs at 4:30 pm

Newport Black Ships Festival

Newport Black Ships Festival

Odaiko New England performs at the Newport Black Ships Festival, hosted by the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island.

Saturday's Prelude will be held at the Long Wharf Mall and Odaiko New England will perform at 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm.

Saturday's Gala will be held at the Rosecliff mansion and will start at 6:30pm. Tickets are $150 and this is a black tie/kimono event.

Sunday's Festival of Drums will be held at
Cardine’s Field and will start at noon.

All of these festivities happen in Newport, RI.

The Mary Baker Eddy Library's "One World" introduces culture and arts to the children of Boston. Odaiko New England's artistic director Juni Kobayashi will be performing at this year's North American Taiko Conference Taiko Ten Concert. As always, the concert features ten groups with ten minutes each. Juni fills this year's theme of "New Works" with her newly composed Genesha Awakens which blends texture, movement, ma and the amazing flare that only she can bring to a piece. The concert is free and open to the public.

Odaiko New England travels to the historic mill town of Newmarket, NH, for the 14th annual Newmarket Heritage Festival—a weekend of music and dance, arts and history, food and fun.
