- Gamelan Galak Tka‘s demonstration of the music of Bali and Indonesia on Gamelan (gongs, drums, flutes and cymbals)
- Cornell Coley‘s tracing of the rhythms of Africa from Africa to America
Odaiko New England performs at 1:00pm and 5:40pm and our workshop will be at 3:50pm. Admission is free.

We’re very pleased to return to Newport’s weekend-long festival celebrating the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to United States trade. The “Black Ships,” or “Kurofune,” refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships.
We’ll be joined this year by the taiko group Shindaiko.
Shimoda is now Newport’s sister city and also celebrates this festival.

Friday evening, catch our full performance at 7pm at Independence Park. The event is free. Bring chairs and blankets to sit out on the grass.
Saturday will feature multiple small performances throughout the day as part of the Arts & Crafts and Martial Arts Fair featuring demonstrations, workshops, and displays. And in the evening, we’ll be performing at the Black Ships Festival Gala.
