Odaiko New England performs at the Newport Black Ships Festival at the historic Cardine’s Field, one of our biggest performances of the year. We’re very pleased to return to Newport’s weekend-long festival celebrating the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to United States trade. The “Black Ships,” or “Kurofune,” refers to the Japanese term for foreign ships.
We’ll be joined this year by the taiko group Shindaiko.
Shimoda is now Newport’s sister city and also celebrates this festival.
The Black Ships festival is hosted by the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island.

We are very happy to announce that Odaiko New England will be hosting workshops taught by a very special master taiko artist, Tiffany Tamaribuchi.
Odaiko Workshop (Monday, 12/10, 6:30 – 9:30 PM)
Great tips and techniques for approaching this fun and powerful style of drumming. We’ll begin with core fundamentals and expand from there to address common problems and work on developing your own style and sense of expression. Mixed Level. Taiko experience required.
Current & Past Rec students are welcome.
Cost is $65.
Also check out the second workshop: KATA, INJURY PREVENTION, CONTROL & EXPRESSION on Tuesday.
Cost for both workshops is $100. Space is limited, so email info@onetaiko.org with
“TT Workshops” in the subject line to reserve your spot.
These workshops will be AWESOME. Don’t miss out on this amazing learning opportunity with one of the leaders in the global taiko community!
About Tiffany Tamaribuchi:
Champion of the 2002 OTAIKO Hibike All Japan Odaiko Contest and a finalist in the first Tokyo International Ippon-Uchi Odaiko Competition, Tiffany is widely recognized as one of the best instructors and workshop facilitators in North America. Her Odaiko workshops at events like the North American Taiko Conference, Taiko Camp, and the Regional Taiko Gatherings are always filled to capacity. Having taught hundreds of workshops, Tamaribuchi has honed her technique and instruction. She brings 22 years experience touring and training professionally with several top companies and folk artists throughout Japan.
Here’s your chance to learn from Tiffany Tamaribuchi sensei without having to travel to taiko conferences. And even if you do travel to taiko conferences, you are never guaranteed to be able to get in her workshop because space is limited and everyone signs up for her workshops.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the greats in the world.
