"Powerful.
Sonic. Visceral. Riveting. Pulse-pounding. Meditative. Healing. Transformative."
Experience all of these sensations as Odaiko New England presents
its winter concert, "TRANSFORMATIONS"
at the Regent Theatre in Arlington (7 Medford St.
Arlington)
on Saturday, December 8th (8:00 pm) and Sunday, December 9th
(3:00 pm).
With guest emcee Ms. Janet Wu (general assignment
reporter and substitute anchor of Channel 7 News, WHDH-TV)
and featuring internationally-renowned shakuhachi player and Japanese
flutist Marco Lienhard (internationally renowned
Artistic Director of Taikoza), the concert promises to be transformative
for performers as well as audience members.
The concert will celebrate the 25th anniversary of
Artistic Director Elaine Fong's taiko career:
"We will transform the Regent Theatre into a place that pulses
with energy. The sonic vibration will be felt and the richness of
the different timbres and voices of the taiko (Japanese drums) will
be heard. While audiences may be more familiar with the unrelenting
decibel level and ferocity of contemporary Japanese taiko groups,
Odaiko New England has been carving out its own unique and distinctive
sound, which fuses the rhythms of other cultures into a voice that
can be characterized as a contemporary American taiko aesthetic",
notes Fong.
In this concert, Odaiko New England ventures into the arena of taiko
theater, combining spoken word, movement, voice, taiko and flute music,
into an allegorical storyline that evokes flow and pulse, love distanced
and found, and communities brought together. The duality, or yin
and yang of the drum will be revealed. In Fong's words, "In
developing and creating contemporary taiko, we want to broaden audiences'
views of what taiko can represent. We hope to expand the range of
the taiko, and create a rhythm journey for audiences that can also
be meditative and quiet, like a heartbeat. Audiences will also see
the premier of a large ensemble piece, "Mahora", and new
solo works."
Advance tickets are $23.50 for adults, $18.50 for students and seniors,
$12.50 for kids under 12. After 12/7/07, add $5 to ticket prices.
Groups of 12 or more: $21.50. Tickets are available at: http://regenttheatre.com/events/Odaiko.htm
